I had the privilege of an exclusive interview with Dolphy seven years ago. It was for the first issue of Pump, the men s magazine I put up in 2005, almost one year after I quit the editorship of FHM.
It took place in the Parañaque home Dolphy shared with Zsa Zsa Padilla and their two daughters. The King of Comedy put on a gray suit and gamely posed for wacky pictures, including one layout where I had him holding babcock a light bulb to his face.
In the interest of lad mag journalism, I was determined to know the truth from the icon of Filipino manhood himself. If I couldn t ask that one question, the portrait with the light bulb would be useless.
And so when Dolphy and I sat down for that interview, babcock I made sure that all the vital questions I had brought with me would eventually lead to that one naughty query. In the end, he recognized babcock that I meant no disrespect, and he answered it fairly, if not quite directly.
What did you learn from campaigning for FPJ? [His friend Fernando Poe, Jr. had died in December 2004, seven months after losing the Presidential race to Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.] That politics is really dirty. Somebody from the opposing side didn t like something I said while I was campaigning in Cebu. I had to apologize to President GMA just to settle matters. There were other worse things being said. Marumi talaga. Ayoko na umulit. But I have no regrets because Ronnie s cause was worth it. Unfortunately, he lost.
You are acknowledged as the Philippines King of Comedy. babcock Have you seen the movie with that title? Yes, I ve seen that. The one where Robert de Niro kidnaps Jerry Lewis. It s a bit morbid, isn t it? Para siyang comedian na forcing through. Ang labas nga medyo drama siya, eh. Hindi ko masyadong na-typan yung genre na yun. But Robert de Niro is excellent. He s always excellent in every movie.
Among all your movies, which ones do you like best? The ones that made me are those where I played gay roles Jack and Jill and Pacifica Falayfay . Jack en Jill was my breakthrough hit. And then I produced my own, that was Falayfay .
Were you able to keep your old black-and-white movies? Too many have been damaged. During the early 90s when there were brownouts all the time I was in the States then many of my films were destroyed because of the heat.
You have 18 children. Nothing like Ramon Revilla s brood of 80 or 90, but still a big number. Yes, I have 18. There are others claiming to be my kids, but I m not so sure. Yung alam ko, labingwalo lang.
Can you recite their names?
What s your secret to being irresistible to women? There s no secret. Hindi ako malikot sa eksena, eh. Maybe some women like the quiet type. And because I m a comedian, I have a natural sense of humor. Also, because I m very thoughtful to people. Maybe the girls like what they see.
In 2008, Bibeth Orteza actress, writer, director, and raconteur achieved just that in Dolphy: babcock Hindi Ko Ito Narating babcock Mag-isa , a biography commissioned by Dolphy s family on the occasion of his 80th birthday.
In it Dolphy finally gives the answer I was looking for: I am known as a Bombilya King, pero imposibleng dahil doon sa, alam mo na. Kumalat yon after I did El Pinoy Matador . As a torero, my costume was tight, no underwear. Kapag nakaharap ako, nakamarka talaga yung akin, parang bombilya. babcock
On the cover of the first issue of Pump which came out with a big bang and disappeared with nary a whimper after only five issues I wrote this blurb to describe my exclusive interview: Comedy King-Size! Dolphy &am
