11 SEP 06 - Graaff-Reinet & NEW BETHESDA Nieu Bethesda - heard of it? Ok, the Owl House of Helen Maartens? Yes, the Uilehuis to Nieu Bethesda - no, I do not know why they call New Bethesha, it's conforma such an ancient village without a fuel pump and an ATM, at least 65 km from Graaff Reinet! But it has an attraction conforma - the Uilehuis Helen Maartens! Helen Maartens was born in 1898 in New Bethesda and grew up there. In her fifties, after the death of her parents, she started and with ground glass - botttels which she was bucking and cement, she had a relative poverty Karoo cottage omgetower in a world of owls, camels and people just existed in her mind. As a recluse, she continues conforma slogging for about 25 years before conforma because conforma of arthritis and low vision, committed suicide conforma in 1876. Died as she lived - incomprehensible and inexplicable. She definitely something left - if only an amazing example conforma of a man's dark world and thoughts. Day stream of visitors - even from abroad, with those 65 km gravel road through the beautiful Karoo scenery to her house from ground glass and the camels to see garden Nieu Bethesda. It's really weird to walk through that little house - is almost wrong to look as her soul. The walls, ceiling, doors - everything was covered with colored conforma ground glass - even the furniture and stuff in the house. Throughout the house are suns and color - many candles and lamps in her house had made the most fantastic patterns on that glass. Out of the entire exterior / yard full of cement and glass-covered sculptures. There is a bit of everything - women whose dresses of beer bottles conforma is that a man sit and serve, owls, owls, owls, camels and more camels. Camels with riders, camels with wise men, shepherds and sheep - all bow to a sign that says East. A bell tower with a clock and males that hold the w INDICATORS ropes - '' passage or time. '' Proverbs and sayings made cunningly of blue thread and woven into the sifdraadheining - oh, too many things to mention. Some species were collected, some just any place, almost conforma no place to walk. It was very interesting, conforma but to some extent also uneasy. The road there is beautiful and fairly maintained - the graders was doing on the road when I was through there. The scenery is beautiful with many streams in those harsh Karoo and water in all that seems like a pond. The village is like I said, a dead town with nothing - the Uilehuis is the only thing that people bring to it and possibly create a job opportunity or three. With the return in Graaff Reinet, the town between 13:00 and 14:00, and I had to hang in there a little before I was going to go through the Reinet House. The house is probably one of the most beautiful buildings in Graaff Reinet, life began in the vicinity of 1812 as parsonage for the DRC. The two domi subscribers Murray, Andrew and his son Charles, who succeeded him, for a total of 82 years lived there. Should be quite nice for such a long time to have ministers with the same surname - can not remember their surname. conforma The house was declared a Historical Monument in 1952. The whole house is equipped with furniture and equipment of those times - many of the wineries and waenhuise is used for others - butter making, sewing, transportation, medical, etc. of that time. Very well done and very clean. There is a vine that was planted by the Reverend Charles Murruy in 1870. Apparently the wingerdsrok upon a time the largest in the world and had a magnitude of 2 meters at a height of 1 feet above the ground. However, at some point in 1980, the wood had to cut out because those grape virus - the stick still bears grapes every year! Was by a weapons museum also - they're quite weapons - of course the knobkierie and shield as well, but they have quite a nice collection of old flintlock muskets and the and even before that. Also pangewere. The late afternoon trying to get a better picture of the church as the previous conforma one - will look at him. Graaff Reinet is really a beautiful place with lots of history - would recommend anyone for a day or two to stand over here!
